Shrimpers in Southwest Louisiana can have their TEDs measured and approved to be sure they are properly installed — NO enforcement actions will be taken during these courtesy checks.

Dale Stevens and Cahn Nguyen, gear specialists with NOAA Fisheries, will make sure TEDs are at the proper angle to insure the release of turtles, and also make recommendations to reduce shrimp loss.

Shrimpers should call their local Louisiana Sea Grant Extension Agent to arrange a time (see below). Fishermen should have their nets hanging so that the TEDs are a few feet above the deck. The whole process takes only a few minutes per net.
