What Is the Fisheries Summit? - LA Fisheries Forward

LA Sea Grant Dulac fisheries event

Louisiana is known for its food – especially seafood! In fact, it is the largest producer of wild-caught seafood in the lower 48 states.
One out of every 70 jobs in Louisiana is connected to the seafood industry.  Many are in family-owned businesses that have been providing fresh seafood for generations.

So it’s only natural there’s an event to bring together the people that provide the best shrimp, crabs, oysters and finfish in the world! The Louisiana Fisheries Forward Summit provides fishermen, dock owners, processors and other related businesses an opportunity to network and get information on what is happening in the commercial fishing and seafood industries.

This year’s Summit will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.  After three successful years of hosting the Summit in Houma, with hundreds attending each year, a decision was made to move the event in order to grow and expand opportunities for participants.

This year’s expo-style Summit will feature an open trade show, presentations and demonstrations throughout the day so attendees can interact directly with exhibitors. As in years past, there will be regulatory, economic, legislative and marketing updates.  There also will be a variety of trade show vendors, and demonstrations such as refrigeration repair, crab shedding, marine vessel stability, Coast Guard safety, chef demos, nano-ice and other new refrigeration equipment, and a whole lot more.

The Summit is part of the newly created Louisiana Fisheries Forward Program (LFF) and is sponsored by Louisiana Sea Grant, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the LSU AgCenter.  LFF was established with the goal of improving the economic success of Louisiana’s commercial fishing industry and is a voluntary education program for members of the commercial seafood community.

This year’s co-sponsors are the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Louisiana Shrimp Task Force, Louisiana Crab Task Force and Louisiana Oyster Task Force.

Lunch will be provided for all attendees who register in advance.  For more information and to register visit: https://www.lafisheriesforward.org/summit/ .
